You don't need a Twitter account
I've been into Twitter (sorry, X) lately as one of my boredom activities. Bad habit I know.
There are a ton of of accounts on there that teach people how to "build an audience" and get followers and then monetize them.
For most people who want to build a business, it's a waste of time.
For aspiring 1099 solo sub-contractors, it's definitely a waste of time.
X being a waste of time for aspiring 1099s may seem obvious, but less obvious are the other time wasters.
Here are some other ones that aren't worth doing until after you get your first gig:
- Building a company website
- Worrying about admin stuff
- Getting an accountant and a lawyer
- Endlessly researching tax benefits
Here are things you should be focusing on:
- Making sure you are valuable enough to your clients and in the job market
- Knowing your acceptable bill rates
- Understanding the risks
- Networking with PMs
- Figuring out if you can convert your current job into a 1099 gig
There is a time and a place for admin and accounting, but it's not BEFORE you get your first gig.
