What would you do in my shoes?

When you're networking, you'll often meet with people that are "higher status" than you.

They are higher status because they are in a better position to help you than you are to help them.

You may be uncomfortable with the imbalance and try to make yourself seem higher status, but that's a losing proposition.

Instead, you should lean into your lower status.

You know what higher status people love?

Being asked for advice and counsel.

If you're meeting with a PM or potential client or a contact at another company, you can explain your situation (e.g. trying to go 1099) and ask:

"What you do if you were in my shoes?"

Usually this leads to a thoughtful pause, some advice, and an offer to help.

Take them up on their offer and follow up with them.

Do this enough times and soon, YOU will be the higher status person, being sought after for your advice and counsel.
