What would it take to get a 25% raise?
There's a misconception that going 1099 take a lot of hard work.
It does take some work, but you have to compare it against something you might try to do anyway.
If you decided to stay in a W2 job but wanted a 25% raise in a year, what would you have to do?
You'd probably need to get a new job.
This would entail:
- Pinging your network and setting up calls/coffees, etc.
- Tailoring your resume
- Prepping for interviews
- Dealing with rejection
- Negotiating your job offers
- Learning a new company culture and project
Getting a new job with a 25% raise is a lot of work!
For the same amount of effort, you could potentially get a 1099 gig with a 25% - 50% pay bump.
And if you decide getting a new job AND going 1099 is too much work?
That's okay.
It probably just means you don't care about making more money or finding a new project.
Just make sure you're doing the proper analysis when deciding what efforts to pursue and not pursue.
