What if your prime loses an award?
Let's say you partner with a prime to bid on a contract. This could be for a re-compete on a contract you're already on, or maybe a whole new contract.
If they win, you get a 1099 position.
If they lose, you don't get a 1099 position.
So what should you do if they lose?
Just find out who won and join their team!
- Ask your now former teaming partner who won (they'll probably know) or find out another way
- Get in touch with the PM at the winning company (leverage your network)
- Introduce yourself and say why you'd be valuable to the project or contract
- Negotiate an agreement
- Start work
If you were the incumbent on a contract that was re-competed it should be an easy pitch.
"Hey I've been doing this work so I can help make this a smooth transition with the client."
If it's work on a different project you should explain that you were teamed with the losing team but you're still interested in the work and would be into exploring ways to join the team.
As a 1099 you need to be a little flexible and learn how to navigate the contracting world in different situations you may come across.
This will ensure you have as many projects as you need and want.
