Three requirements for a successful negotiation

If you are negotiating a 1099 gig, you need three things:

An upbeat attitude

No one likes dealing with a jerk. You should be courteous, professional, and display a desire to make the deal work. This doesn't mean you want to make the deal work at any cost (hence the negotiation), but showing good faith goes a long way.

Evidence of your value

You need to prove how valuable this you are. This could be a good client relationship, a history of great work, or simply competing demand for your talents. There's a reason a prime would want you as a 1099. It's important to be able to demonstrate it.

Willingness to walk away

No deal is better than a bad deal. If you get too attached to making a deal happen, you'll end up hurting your position. Be willing to say no and let the deal fall through. Get backup options if possible (savings, other job offer or projects, staying where you are, etc.).

If you have all three requirements you will be successful at negotiations.
