The system is rigged
You ever notice the same companies seem to wig the big government contracts over and over again?
Well, that's because the system is rigged.
It's not rigged in the sense that it's corrupt, but rather, it's rigged because over time the federal government procurement system has evolved to:
- Favor large companies
- Favor incumbents
- Favor low prices over performance
- Favor companies with significant resources
The chances of you winning any sort of significant contract using the procurement process and bidding on stuff is pretty low.
But, all systems have weaknesses and flaws that you can take advantage of as an aspiring 1099.
For example
- Large companies win big contracts, but can't fill 100% of the staffing needs. You can be in that 10% they can't staff as a 1099
- Incumbents have good client relationships but, you can also develop good client relationships via previous projects and companies. Leverage it to get a 1099 gig.
- Big companies have low prices and their margins can be slim due to overhead. You have low overhead because you have no staff or office. You can pitch a "low price" to the prime and still be far more profitable
- Big companies have lots of resources. You have little to no resources but you don't need that many. A little hustle and some savings go a long way.
You won't change the system, but you can take advantage of it and get a 1099 gig that dramatically improves your earnings and lifestyle.
