The grind

Generated by DALL·E

On most days over the last few weeks, I've woken up at 5:00 AM, wrote this newsletter, went to the day job on the client site, e-mailed folks I'm networking with, met them for happy hour, hopped on phone calls, coordinated stuff for my upcoming move, spent time with my family, and mapped out some moves to make with the business.

While some of this is fun and in service of my goals, it definitely feels like a grind.

And that's okay.

Every lifestyle choice you make has a grind element to it.

If you work a W2 job, just going to work and getting through the day is a grind.

If you're trying to get your first 1099 gig, networking and researching is a grind.

Once you get your first 1099 gig, building the client relationship and setting yourself up for your next gig is a grind.

Expanding your business is a grind.

So you're going to grind no matter what.

The key is to direct the energy of the grind to something that matters to you.

When I went 1099 I was willing to grind for more autonomy and money.

I'm still grinding for those things, but now it's more in service of having more interesting work (building a business) and time to spend with my family.

So grind away! Just make sure the grinding is getting you to where you want to go.
