The different jobs you have as a 1099
You may want go 1099 because you just want to focus on doing the work, and not on any of the extra duties companies give their W2 employees.
While it's true you can focus more on your work and make more money, this doesn't mean you have zero other jobs to do.
Here's a list of jobs you have as a 1099:
- Employee - You do the actual client work
- Chief Operations Officer - You manage contracts, time cards, etc.
- Chief Financial Officer - You track invoicing, follow up on payments, file your taxes, etc.
- Head of Business Development - You maintain and develop relationships with governments and prime contractors
- Human Resources Officer - You make sure employees have ample vacation opportunities, keep progressing in their careers, have health care and 401k benefits, etc.
- Chief Executive Officer - You make sure the businesses overall resources (time, energy, and money) are being spent wisely
It seems like a lot but fortunately as a solo 1099, you only have to coordinate with...yourself!
And the more administrative roles don't end up taking too much time once you have systems in place. The most important parts about being a successful 1099 is to do good work for the client and developing relationships with key people.
