"Sunday Scaries" are a symptom

Generated by DALL·E

One of the signs you need to change things up at work is that you regularly get the "Sunday Scaries."

If on Sunday (or in my case, even Saturday), you start getting anxious and feeling dread about going in to work on Monday, you should analyze why you feel that way.

It could be:

  • A bad boss
  • Boring work
  • Doing work you're not good at
  • Too much work
  • Not getting enough recognition
  • A sucky commute
  • Poor compensation

The role work plays in your life is tricky, and it's important to get into the particular reasons why you feel the way you do about your work.

Going 1099 may solve some (but probably not all) of those problems. It can solve compensation, work-life balance issues, and bad bosses. It may even get you more interesting projects.

But it may be an equally valid choice to just get a different job. If you think you want to go 1099 but really you're just escaping a bad boss, you can potentially even switch projects within your own company.

So if you get the Sunday scaries, start diving deep into what causes it, and then make a plan to address those root issues.

Then you can get back to enjoying your weekends.
