Relationship awareness

I recently interviewed for a job with a prime with the goal of getting a 1099/sub-contracting gig.

They wanted to make an offer but were not interested in adding a new sub-contractor. The PM planned to let the other subs take a stab at filling the position first.

The PM, because he wanted to maintain good relationships with his subs, wanted to prioritize them first.

A pre-existing relationship got in the way of me getting a 1099 gig.

Being aware of and managing relationships with the various folks you're going to interact with (PMs, your boss, clients, co-workers, etc.) is critical.

For example, if you work for a sub-contractor and are looking to flip your job into a 1099 gig by subbing directly to the prime, there is a risk that the prime won't go for it because they want to maintain a positive relationship with the sub (i.e. your employer).

This will put you in a awkward spot with your own company, and you may have to quit.

Being aware of the different relationships that may impact your 1099 success will help you succeed and avoid landmines.
