Patience
One of the reasons you want to go 1099 is because of a lack of patience.
You don't want to wait a few years to get promoted and to get the salary you want.
You want it now!
You don't want to wait until you're senior enough to get autonomy and set your own schedule.
You want it this week, when you want to take Friday off without worrying about your PTO budget.
And it's true, going 1099 can get you those things faster than you could as a W2 employee.
But things will never move as fast you want.
You never control as many external factors as you want.
No matter how aggressive you are with networking, building skills, and pursuing new opportunities, it will always feel too slow.
So the only thing to do is learn how to be patient.
This doesn't mean white-knuckling it until you have a good attitude, but rather, learning to enjoy your life now.
If you can't enjoy it now, you won't enjoy it when you eventually do get what you want.
So plan your vacation, hang out with your friends, and sneak out of work to see a motive at 2 PM.
That's how you cultivate patience.
