Move with a sense of urgency

Generated by DALL·E

One of the characteristic traits of government work is that it's slooooow.

Not many people want to make decisions on their own. They consult with others. They analyze all their options. Then do it again. Then they decide to punt the decision down the road.

Now, figuring out your options and consulting other is not bad.

But once you have done that, you need to make a decision, and quickly.

Once you understand the basics of solo 1099 federal sub-contracting (say, by reading my book), make a plan, and then execute it.

Don't wait until next week to send an e-mail to your former client to set up a coffee meeting.

If you have another good job offer, immediately set up a conversation with your current boss to see if they'd keep you on as a 1099.

If a recruiter offers to set up an interview with a program manager, set it up for tomorrow or the day after tomorrow. Don't push it out.

You'll get energized from moving quickly, and you'll make more progress.

Prepare, then act with a sense of urgency.
