Learn on the job as a W2

When I was a W2 employee, I missed out on the opportunity to learn how business development works in government contracting. This means I now have to learn it on the fly, without guarantees of a paycheck, as I try to grow the business.

As an aspiring 1099, you can take your time as a W2 to pick up skills that will help you get 1099 gigs.

You can learn

  • Technical skills
  • How to manage clients/cultivate client relationships
  • How to get intel on upcoming opportunities
  • What government customers want/need
  • Other competitors/potential primes you can 1099 to

Being a W2 can suck if you're only there for the paycheck. But, if you can leverage your time as an employee to set yourself up for 1099 success, it will be way more interesting.
