Keeping your options open

Optionality is very valuable.

Having your choice of projects and the ability to walk away from any project dramatically improves your confidence and happiness levels as a 1099.

To maintain optionality, you should

  • Be friendly and professional with clients and program managers
  • Do good work
  • Maintain relationships by liberally making use of coffee meet ups, happy hours, and e-mail updates
  • Build a 6 month to 1 year savings fund

This is good practice for W2 employees too. It's just more obvious you need it as a 1099.
