Job interviews as 1099 opportunities
If you get a job interview with a government contractor, view it as an opportunity to turn that into a 1099 gig.
To do this, you need to
- Be likable
- Impress the hiring manager (who is hopefully the Program Manager)
- Ask good questions about the client, the work, and the contract
- Get a sense of what the salary would be
- Be willing to turn down the W2 offer if they make one
A few years ago, I had several offers and turned three of them into 1099 gigs.
After the interview I would tell the PM, "Hey I'd love to work with you. I think I could add value to your project, but I've gotten used to working for myself as a 1099. Would it be impossible to make that happen?"
The PM will push back but if they really want to bring you on, they will make it happen.
