How to go 1099 faster

Going 1099 can be a slow process. Some of it is just a lack of knowledge about how to do it. Other times it's due to external factors outside of your control.

But say you wanted to go 1099 in the next six months (a pretty fast timeline): here's what I'd do:

  1. Doing great work for my current government client and boss
  2. Setting up two or three coffee meetings/phone calls/happy hours per week with my network

I'd ignore everything else. I wouldn't set up a website or form an LLC. I wouldn't try do any marketing or build a portfolio of my work or whatever. I'd simply try to build a good reputation for quality work and then tell my network I'm keeping an eye out for new projects in a 1099 capacity.

If you do this for six months you'll likely get an opportunity to go 1099. It's not easy. It's easier to focus on setting up your website. But it's definitely faster.
