How to bluff that you're quitting

If you're trying to negotiate a 1099 agreement with your employer and they keep putting up roadblocks and making excuses, you might have to quit or bluff that you'll quit.

Assuming you don't actually want to quit, here is some language you can use to bluff:

Hi [Boss/Program Manager],

I appreciate the effort you put in to making the 1099 effort work. Unfortunately it seems like there are too many obstacles to make that happen. Is that accurate?

Assuming that's the case, I'll let you know in a few weeks what my transition plan is. Hopefully we can keep working together in some capacity.

Thanks again!

-You

This just hints that you're willing to walk without actually commititng to do so. It adds a vague timeline in the near future to make it seem more urgent.

Assuming you're valuable enough to want to keep, it's amazing how many obstacles get removed once your employer thinks you'll quit.
