Growth = More Leads and More Products
One of Ramit's Sethi's courses is called "Double Engine Growth."
Double Engine Growth
I haven't purchased it, but his marketing materials had this section that really stuck with me:
To grow your business, you need more leads and more products.
Simplifying growth to these two elements really helped me decide what to focus on when growing my own government contracting business.
In my government contracting business , this means I need to find
- More program manager relationships (leads) and
- More employees (products).
Anything that doesn't help me get those two things will not help the business grow.
For a SOLO 1099, it's slightly different.
You still need more program manager relationships. When one project ends you want to be able to make a phone call and get onto another project.
You obviously don't need more employees, but you can offer more "services."
This could mean
- More skills - (e.g. learn Excel if you're a writer)
- More advanced or different versions of your current skills (learn to write better or write different types of things)
- Additional insight - Bring outside knowledge in (implement Agile in a non-agile org)
- Additional relationships - Leverage a good client relationship that will help on a sub-contract
The more options you have for sub-contracts and services, the more success you will have as a 1099.
