Find billable rates on BUY.GSA.GOV

One way to get a sense of what the billable rates are for your field is to use the BUY.GSA.GOV website.

The government built this cool search tool that looks at contract data for GSA Multiple Award Schedule (MAS) contracts.

Companies on these contracts submit rates for various labor categories. They might not have won any contracts with those rates but it's useful for a sanity check.

If I search data scientist with between 5 and 10 years of experience, I get an average price of $158/hour.

It also generates a table with the Vendor/Contract and the Contract vehicle. You can use this data to research the company and potentially do some networking.
