Eyes on your own paper

My teachers in elementary school used to tell us to "keep your eyes on your own paper" when we were taking a quiz or test to prevent cheating.

But this is good life advice too.

If you start worrying about what others are doing, you will feel insecure.

You will ignore your own intuition and train yourself to dismiss your own victories.

You do this long enough and you'll be a mess of a person: anxious and slightly bitter.

The nice part about going 1099 is little by little, you train yourself to play by your own rules.

You learn to appreciate small victories and let go of previous envies.

Sure, your friend might have gotten promoted to being a managing director at some big firm, but does he get to take a nap on Friday afternoons?

Doubtful.

So when it comes to your own ambitions, keep your eyes on your own paper.
