Don't ask for more work
I met with a young guy I'm trying to recruit (a few years out of college) over a drink last night and he mentioned he's trying to get promoted, learn more, and earn more money.
He said he asked his boss for more work.
This is a bad idea.
First, when you ask your boss for more work, it puts the burden of thinking on them. That may be their job, but it's not a great idea to give your boss something to do.
Second, it's a lost opportunity to take control of your own work agenda and practice your consulting skills. You'll be at the mercy of whatever it is your boss wants you to do, which may or may not help your career or interest you.
What you should do instead is
- Identify a high value project for your client
- Pitch three versions of this project to your boss (easy, medium, hard)
- Make a recommendation
- Ask for his thoughts
It's much easier for your boss to choose from options then it is to come up with things for your to do from scratch.
You will also get a reputation for taking the initiative, and then if you do a good job, get credit for the high value work.
This will set you up nicely to go 1099, particularly if the client recognizes your great work.
