Compliment your colleagues/clients

Part of being a successful 1099 is being likable.

If your colleagues, program managers, and clients like you, they'll want to help you.

And you know what people like?

Compliments.

I don't mean the ass kissing kind (though I do like being on the receiving end of that too).

But if you're able to compliment something specific about someone's work or the way they handle things, you'll make their day.

Adults are STARVED for compliments, so even a small one goes a long way.

Some examples:

  • I always find your thoughts about X really insightful
  • I'm really glad you're the one leading this project. You keep things on track.
  • I appreciate you defending the team with the boss. It's nice to know you have our back.

It may feel cheesy but try it! It really works. And you'll feel good about it too.
