Communicate your value
If you want to be successful in getting a 1099 gig (or a new W2 gig) for that matter, you have to communicate your value to decision makers.
How you do this comes in different forms.
If you are applying for a job online, for example, the way you communicate value initially is through your resume. If you get an interview, you have the opportunity to talk about your experience and skills in a way that demonstrates you could help the company achieve something they value.
As an aspiring 1099, here are different ways you can communicate your value:
- Doing quality work with your client
- Improving your relationship with your client
- Raising your professional profile (speak at conferences, publish examples or tutorial of your work online, etc.)
- Asking high quality business questions to your clients or program managers that show you understand their problems
- Getting referrals to potential clients and program managers through a mutual contact
- Writing a resume with a clear narrative and value proposition (not just a list of jobs)
If you're always thinking of what clients or potential clients value AND think of ways you can deliver and communicate that value, you'll have no problems getting gigs.
