Close the loop with your clients
Part of being a good consultant is communicating with your client consistently.
An easy win in the comms department is to always "close the loop" on any open tasks or items you discussed.
If you have something you were or are working on, send an e-mail that says
- The current status of the task
- Next steps if any
- When you will follow up again
Example template:
"Hi client,
I'm in the middle of task X.
I completed parts A, B, and C and will follow up with so-and-so by the end of the week to get that paperwork done.
I'll let you know next Monday where we're at with X.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
-Your 1099 Consultant"
This works with bosses, clients, and generally anyone you work with. It makes you look super competent because very few people pro-actively follow up.
