Client referrals are gold
I detail a few methods in my book for getting your first 1099 gig:
- Converting your current job to a 1099 gig
- Networking your way to a 1099 gig
- "Applying" to a 1099 gig
In all three methods, the most valuable thing you can leverage is having a good client relationship (i.e. the government employee who oversaw your work).
Job Conversion: If you have a good client relationship at your current gig, your company will want to retain you.
Networking: If you have a good client relationship, they will be willing to put you in touch with other program managers or other government employees who oversee other contracts that could bring you on.
Job application: If you apply for a job and you know who the client is and have a good relationship with them, you'll get it and make a strong case for 1099. Or, the potential client may know your previous client and check in with them to see if you're legit.
Investing some time in building a good client relationship is worth its weight in gold. Going on coffee breaks, engaging in casual office banter and gossip, and doing good work for them is the way to build that relationship.
