Big W2 raise or 1099?

Here's a quick test I use with people to see if they actually want to go 1099.

I ask them, if I gave you a 25% raise and a new job at a different company, would you be happy?

If they say yes, there's a good chance they should remain a W2.

It's not that they couldn't be successful as a 1099, it's just that most 1099s I know also require more independence, in addition to the money and good working conditions.

It's not a perfect test, but it is revealing, so if you're on the fence, see how you'd answer it. Maybe a better W2 job is the right path for you.

Or maybe you confirm that you do need the independence and 1099 is the way to go.

Be honest with yourself about your true motivations, and then you can make better career decisions.
