Be reliable

If you want to be viewed as competent and professional, you don't need to be a hot shot, you just need to be reliable.

What does being reliable mean?

Doing what you say you'll do.

This quality is surprisingly rare in the government contracting business.

And while simple, can also be quite difficult to achieve.

Here are a few reasons:

  • You overestimate your own capabilities
  • You underestimate how difficult or how long something will take
  • You get distracted with other tasks
  • You take on too much
  • You get bored and unmotivated with the task half way through

So you may think being reliable is something professionally trivial, it's actually a high leverage quality that can help you get your first 1099 gig.
