Be likable
I've met many mediocre professionals who are very likable. No one gets mad at them for their mediocre work products.
"Oh that Jeremy he always has typos but that's just the way he is! Besides, he's always bringing donuts to the office!"
Being likable goes a long way to establishing and maintaining good relationships.
Don't use it as a crutch for incompetence of course, but rather, as a "1099 force multiplier."
Here are some things you can do:
- Ask people about their personal lives (family, hobbies, etc.)
- Share a bit about your own personal life
- Make jokes
- Do favors
- Give compliments
- Bring donuts in to the office (I'm only half kidding)
- Set up happy hour for your colleagues
It sounds pretty basic but it's helpful.
Now, don't change your entire personality. That will just come off as awkward.
But choose a few areas to focus on to increase your likability and take action over a few months.
Your relationships will improve which will ultimately help you with 1099 opportunities.
