Ask the recruiter these three questions

A recruiter may reach out to you looking to hire you as a W2 employee for your company.

They may or may not know that much about the role/contract, but you should gather as much information as you can.

If you ask these three questions, you should get a sense of whether or not you can and would want to pursue a 1099 gig with them.

  • Can you tell me more about the client and the work? This gives you a sense of what you'd be doing and what you'd be working on.
  • Is your company the prime on this contract? How much time is left on the contract? If the company is the prime there is a good chance you could go 1099 if they want you. In addition, you can determine if there is enough time left to make it worth it.
  • Would you be opposed to sharing the salary range for this position? You can estimate the bill rate by taking the salary, dividing by 1000, and =/- 0%. $100,000 salary becomes $80/hr - $120/hr bill rate.

If the position seems interesting, the company is a prime, and the target bill rate is worth it, see if you can get an interview with the hiring manager or program manager.

Once they want you you can indicate you'd only do it as a 1099.
