A recent consultation with a reader

A reader recently booked a consultation with me because she found out that the contract she supports could pay her at least 25% more than her current hourly rate and she wanted to re-negotiate.

There were some interesting particulars about her situation:

  • Her immediate boss and other higher ups were leaving. She has good relationships with them so she’d have to start over
  • Her contract is approaching the end of her current option period and the start of another one
  • The prime program manager is an idiot
  • She is doing high value work beyond the scope of her current assignment
  • She wanted to make sure she got to keep doing the high level work when new management showed up, and not just the lower value work

By the end of the call we figured out

  • Who to talk to first about re-negotiating her contract (rate and terms)
  • How she should frame her negotiating position
  • What NOT to worry about right now
  • Some bonus ideas on how to make herself more marketable for other projects

My book is a good resource for getting you to your first 1099 gig, but sometimes it’s helpful to talk over the particulars of your situation.

If you’re interested in booking a consultation, I currently charge $250 / session. I will likely raise my price in the near future.

If you haven’t bought the book yet I’m also offering a combo consultation + book for $300. This is effectively a $50 discount on the normal $100 price for the book.

To purchase, just reply to this e-mail and I’ll coordinate directly with you.

Have a great weekend!
